The quality of your installer matters more than the badge on the heat pump. Here’s what to look for — and the questions worth asking before you commit.
When people compare heat pump quotes, they often focus on the brand of the unit. But two installs of the exact same heat pump can perform completely differently depending on how they were designed, fitted and commissioned. In other words, who you choose matters more than what they fit.
Start with accreditation
MCS certification isn’t just a logo — it’s what allows your installer to apply for grant funding like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and it sets a standard for design and installation quality. Look for relevant accreditations such as MCS, NAPIT and manufacturer-approved installer status, which can also unlock extended warranties.
Ask how they design the system
This is the single most revealing question you can ask. A good installer will talk about a room-by-room heat loss calculation, flow temperatures and emitter sizing. If the answer is vague, or the system is sized off the back of your old boiler’s output, that’s a red flag.
- Do you carry out a full, room-by-room heat loss survey?
- Is the heating design done in-house, and can I see it?
- What flow temperature is the system designed to run at?
- How will the system be commissioned and the controls set up?
- What aftercare and servicing do you offer once it’s installed?
Look for honesty over the hard sell
The best installers will tell you if a heat pump isn’t the right move yet, or if you’d benefit from improving insulation or upsizing a few radiators first. Honest, jargon-free advice is a sign of a company that’s thinking about your long-term comfort rather than a quick sale.
