The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme, explained simply

Government grant funding can take a big chunk off the cost of a heat pump — but the details trip people up. Here's a plain-English guide to who qualifies and how it works.

Government grant funding can take a big chunk off the cost of a heat pump — but the details trip people up. Here’s a plain-English guide to who qualifies and how it works.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the main government grant helping homeowners in England and Wales switch from fossil-fuel heating to a heat pump. It’s designed to bring the upfront cost much closer to that of a new boiler — and for a lot of homes, it makes the numbers genuinely add up.

How much is the grant?

The scheme currently provides £7,500 towards the cost of an air source heat pump. The grant is paid to your installer and deducted from your quote, so you don’t have to find the money upfront and claim it back later.

Who is eligible?

  • You own the property (homeowners and private landlords both qualify)
  • The property is in England or Wales
  • You have a valid EPC, generally with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation
  • You’re replacing a fossil-fuel system such as gas, oil or LPG

There are a few finer points — for example around new builds and properties already on a renewable system — but for most homeowners replacing an older boiler, eligibility is straightforward.

How the application works

The grant has to be applied for by an MCS-certified installer, which is one of the reasons accreditation matters so much when choosing who to work with. As an MCS-certified company, we handle the entire application on your behalf as part of our process — you don’t need to fill in forms or chase paperwork.

We take care of the grant from start to finish, so the £7,500 simply comes off your price.

Grant rules and funding levels can change, so the best step is always to check your specific situation. Tell us a little about your home and we’ll confirm your likely eligibility and what it means for your costs.
